Building opportunity through out of School Time
Afterschool and summer programs are an essential part of our education system.
Out of school time programs are a great investment! In 2021, the Joint State Government Commission released a report on the return-on-investment (ROI) for investing in out-of-school time (OST) in Pennsylvania. The ROI came out to be a whopping $6.69. This means for every $1 spent on OST, $6.69 was saved!
Decades of research prove that kids in afterschool attend school more often, get better grades, and are more likely to graduate. (Find more research on outcomes and impact in this handout, on the Afterschool Alliance site and at Help Kids Recover.)

From hands-on STEM projects and leadership opportunities to solving real-world problems and exploring careers, out of school time programs expose children to new experiences that help them build confidence, teamwork, communication, and other important life skills.
